Venus im Pelz (Venus in Furs), published in 1870, is the best-known work of Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, written in German. The novella presents a man who enters into a contractual relationship of submission with a dominant woman, framing desire, power, and humiliation through an elaborate philosophical lens. Sacher-Masoch intended it as part of a larger cycle exploring fate and human nature.
The work gave the psychological term “masochism” to the world and remains a provocative study of obsession and power dynamics. Download this free public-domain EPUB to read the original German text of this culturally significant and controversial classic.
