Written in French and first performed in Paris, Salomé (1891) is Wilde’s most radical dramatic work — a symbolist one-act play in ornate biblical prose in which Herod’s stepdaughter demands the head of John the Baptist as reward for her dance. Banned in Britain until 1931, the play inspired Richard Strauss’s famous opera and remains a landmark of decadent literature.
