Alice Caldwell Hegan Rice was a Kentucky-born author best known for her enormously popular Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch. A Romance of Billy-Goat Hill, published in 1912, is set in the American South and features Rice’s characteristic blend of local color, romantic plotting, and sympathetic treatment of working-class characters.
