The Enchiridion — meaning handbook or manual in Greek — is a short distillation of the Stoic philosophy of Epictetus, a former slave who became one of the most influential philosophers of his era. Compiled by his student Arrian in the second century AD, the work’s central insight is the distinction between what is up to us (our own judgments, impulses, desires) and what is not — and the freedom that comes from focusing only on the former.
