Resurrection (1899) was Tolstoy’s last major novel and, in many ways, his most socially radical. A nobleman serves on a jury and recognizes the defendant — a woman he seduced and abandoned years earlier whose life he thereby ruined. Seized by guilt and the desire to atone, he follows her to Siberia, and what he witnesses indicts the entire tsarist legal, penal, and social system.

Tolstoy used the royalties from this novel to fund the emigration of the Doukhobors religious sect. This free EPUB download makes his powerful final statement freely available to all readers.
