The shelf draws on the enormous output of Victorian-era historians and commentators: John Richard Green’s popular history of the English people, the political writings of John Stuart Mill, and the travel literature of explorers who mapped the globe for European audiences. Works extending into the First World War era give the collection a natural terminus in the catastrophe that ended the long nineteenth century.
