The only Shakespeare comedy set entirely in England and among the middle classes, The Merry Wives of Windsor was reputedly written at the command of Queen Elizabeth I, who wanted to see Falstaff in love. The fat knight attempts to seduce two married women simultaneously, only to be outwitted at every turn by the resourceful wives of the title.
A broad, fast-moving farce with a warmth missing from Shakespeare’s more courtly comedies, it remains hugely enjoyable on stage. This free EPUB is ready for any e-reader.
