Xenophon’s Hellenica picks up where Thucydides left off — at the year 411 BC — and carries the history of Greece forward through the defeat of Athens, the rise of Spartan hegemony, the Theban interlude under Epaminondas, and the Battle of Mantinea in 362 BC. It is an indispensable primary source for half a century of Greek history about which we would otherwise know very little.
This free EPUB is cleanly formatted for e-readers. While Xenophon has often been criticised for partisan sympathies toward Sparta and selective coverage, the Hellenica remains the essential narrative account of Greece’s complex and turbulent fourth century BC.
