Plato’s Apology is his account of the speech Socrates made in his own defense at his trial in Athens in 399 BC, when he faced charges of impiety and corrupting the youth of the city. In it, Socrates articulates his philosophical mission with clarity and courage, famously declaring that the unexamined life is not worth living, and accepting death rather than abandoning philosophy.
Short but foundational, the Apology is one of the most important documents in the history of Western philosophy and the best introduction to the Socratic spirit. Download this free EPUB from Better Gutenberg and hear Socrates speak for himself.
