Alexandre Herculano (1810–1877) is one of the great figures of Portuguese Romanticism — celebrated primarily as a historian and novelist, but also the author of lyric and patriotic verse that places him in the first rank of nineteenth-century Portuguese poetry. His Poesias reveal the same passion for history, liberty, and national identity that animated his prose.
