Published in 1917, His Last Bow collects eight Sherlock Holmes stories written between 1908 and 1917, including the title story — a moving farewell set on the eve of the First World War in which Holmes, long retired to beekeeping in Sussex, is revealed to have been working for British intelligence. The story ends with Holmes gazing at the “east wind” about to break over Europe, one of Conan Doyle’s most resonant passages.
The collection also includes “The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans” and “The Adventure of the Devil’s Foot.” Download this free EPUB from Better Gutenberg for all eight stories.
