Doctrina Christiana is the first book printed in the Philippines, produced in Manila in 1593. A Christian catechism prepared for missionary instruction, it presents basic prayers and doctrines in Spanish and in Tagalog, the latter rendered in both the Latin alphabet and the indigenous Baybayin script.
As the earliest known imprint of the islands, the work is a landmark in the history of Philippine printing and the Spanish colonial mission. It documents early efforts to evangelize and to commit a Southeast Asian language to print. This free EPUB edition preserves the historic text for readers of colonial, religious, and printing history.
