Farthest North, Vol. II, is the second volume of Fridtjof Nansen’s classic account of his daring Arctic expedition aboard the specially built ship Fram between 1893 and 1896. The Norwegian explorer and scientist sought to reach the North Pole by deliberately freezing his vessel into the polar ice and drifting with the currents toward the top of the world.
This volume continues the record of the voyage, including Nansen’s audacious attempt with Hjalmar Johansen to push north on foot and by sledge and kayak, attaining a record latitude before their long, perilous return. Written with vivid detail and scientific observation, the narrative conveys the hardships, beauty, and danger of the frozen north. It remains one of the great works of polar exploration literature.
