Heinrich von Treitschke was the most influential German nationalist historian of the nineteenth century, and this work — available here in Italian translation — applies his penetrating if partisan analysis to French history from the Napoleonic Empire through the revolutions of 1830 and 1848 to the catastrophic defeat of 1870-71. Treitschke’s perspective is unashamedly German, celebrating the rise of Prussia and viewing French decline as the inevitable result of political instability and moral weakness.

The work is essential reading for understanding nineteenth-century German historiography and the ideological backdrop to German unification. Note: this text is in Italian.
