John Gower (c. 1330–1408) was one of the three great poets of fourteenth-century England alongside Chaucer and Langland. Volume 2 of his complete works centres on the Confessio Amantis, a massive narrative poem in which the confessor Genius relates classical and medieval tales to illustrate the sins of love — an English companion piece to Chaucer’s storytelling ambitions.

Less widely read than Chaucer today, Gower repays discovery with his elegant verse and rich store of narrative. This free EPUB is cleanly formatted for comfortable reading.
