“Do you know what an oath is, my child?” asked the judge.

“Yes, sir, I am obliged to tell the truth.”

“And what will happen if you tell lies?”

“I shall go to the naughty place,” replied the child.

“Are you sure of that?”

“Yes, sir, quite sure.”

“Let her be sworn,” said the judge; “it is clear she knows a great deal more than I do.”
