The medieval legend held that the wood of the Cross grew from a seed of the Tree of Life placed in Adam’s mouth, and passed through Solomon, the Queen of Sheba and the Pool of Bethesda before the Crucifixion. This book reproduces a series of woodcuts printed by Veldener in 1483, with the old text from Caxton’s Golden Legend, a preface by Sabine Baring-Gould and notes on each picture.
