Maui, the trickster demigod of Polynesia, fishes islands out of the sea, pushes up the sky, snares the sun to slow its course, steals the secret of fire and battles monsters, while his mother Hina has adventures of her own. Westervelt gathers the Hawaiian versions and compares them with tales from New Zealand and the wider Pacific.
