In a sleepy English town where everyone knows everyone’s business, old Mrs. Bertram’s will and her son Captain Bertram’s attraction to the pretty Josephine Hart set the drawing rooms talking. Around them a group of young women, among them Beatrice and Kate, wrestle with family expectations, small-town snobbery, the usual scrapes and the question of whom to marry.
One of the prolific Meade’s stories of girlhood, with more romance and social comedy than her school tales. Download the free EPUB.
