At the stately Georgian house of Aston-Adey, the fastidious Arnold Champion-Cheney awaits the mother who eloped with Lord Porteous thirty years before, leaving his father behind. Her return, and the old lovers’ bickering, prove a pointed lesson for Arnold’s young wife Elizabeth, who is tempted to follow the same path.
