The brothers Sganarelle and Ariste are each raising a young ward they intend to marry. Ariste trusts Léonor with freedom; Sganarelle locks Isabella up, and she uses his suspicion to send messages to her lover Valère through the jealous guardian himself. First performed in 1661, the comedy is given here in English with an introductory notice.
