On a Missouri plantation, the enslaved lovers Glen and Melinda are secretly married, then threatened by the lust and cruelty of their master, Dr. Gaines. While the comic servant Cato schemes and sings, the pair plan their escape north toward Canada. Brown, himself a fugitive from slavery, read the play aloud at antislavery meetings before publishing it in 1858.
