When the earthquake of December 1908 destroyed Messina and much of the Straits, Maud Howe was living in Rome and threw herself into the American relief effort. She describes the ruined city, the cruise of the relief ship Bayern, visits from the Italian royal family, and the building of new homes for survivors, then turns to the beauty of Sicily itself.
A vivid first-hand account of disaster and recovery by the daughter of Julia Ward Howe. Download the free EPUB.
