In 1862 a young English viscount and his doctor friend set out to find a route through British territory to the Pacific. They sailed to Quebec, travelled west by rail and steamer, wintered on the prairies, then pushed through the Yellowhead Pass and the forests of British Columbia, close to starvation, with a strange hanger-on and a Native family.
