In 1740 Commodore George Anson sailed with a squadron to attack Spain’s Pacific possessions. Compiled by his chaplain Richard Walter, this narrative records the terrible passage round Cape Horn, scurvy that killed most of the crews, the refuge of Juan Fernández, raids on the coast of Peru, and the long chase across the Pacific in the Centurion. John Masefield’s introduction describes the ships and seamen of the age.
One of the great narratives of eighteenth-century seafaring, much read in its own time and still enthralling. Download the free EPUB.
