Beginning with Norsemen like Naddod the Viking, blown to Iceland in 861, this history follows the search for the northern passages through Hudson, Phipps and the young Nelson, Buchan and Franklin, Ross’s failures and Parry’s successes. Later chapters cover Franklin’s overland journeys, Parry’s polar attempt and the agonised searches and abandoned ships of the Victorian era.
A clear, well-paced narrative survey for anyone drawn to polar history and the age of ice-bound ships. Download the free EPUB.
