Starting with Parry’s attempt of 1827, Bryce recounts the long assault on the North Pole: Kane and Hayes, the German and Austro-Hungarian expeditions, the voyage of the Polaris, the British effort of 1875–76, the Jeannette and its survivors, and onward toward the race for the Pole itself. He pays close attention to ships, sledges, equipment and how men survived the ice.
