William Drake Westervelt arranges Hawaiian traditions in rough historical order, moving from Maui’s quest for immortality and the water of life through the voyagers of the Pacific and island rulers such as Ka-kuhi-hewa of Oahu, to the wars of the eighteenth-century chiefs, Kamehameha’s rise and the coming of foreigners.
