When Mr. Roscoe’s letters arrive, young Hector learns a secret that strips him of his home and fortune at Castle Roscoe and sends him off to the Smith Institute. There he must stand up to the playground bully and to Socrates Smith, a headmaster far keener on collecting tuition than on teaching, while he works to win back what is rightfully his.
Classic Alger pluck and fair play, with a satirical boarding-school setting that recalls Dickens’s Dotheboys Hall. Download the free EPUB.
