Joe, a mongrel whose ears and tail were cut off by a brutal milkman, narrates his rescue by the Morris family in a small town in Maine. Through his eyes we see kindness and cruelty to horses, cats, birds and farm animals, as Miss Laura and her brothers join a Band of Mercy and learn to care for the creatures around them.
Based on a real dog and written as a Canadian answer to Black Beauty, it remains a touching animal-welfare classic. Download the free EPUB.
