David Grieve and his wild sister Louie grow up as orphans on a hard Derbyshire hill farm under a grudging aunt. Escaping to Manchester, David makes his way as a bookseller, while Louie’s restless beauty leads them both to Paris and its art world. Through love, loss and doubt the novel follows his search for a faith he can live by.
