Ernest Maltravers, a gifted, idealistic young Englishman, shelters Alice Darvil, the innocent daughter of a criminal, and the two fall in love before chance separates them. Over the years that follow he travels, writes, enters politics and society and loves other women, while Lytton explores the education of a man of genius and the claims of literature and public life.
