A painter on holiday at Folkestone notices Flora Saunt, a girl of dazzling beauty, and the odd fact that she is often seen in large, disfiguring eyeglasses. As he paints her portrait and watches her suitors, he slowly uncovers what her vanity is hiding and what it will cost her.
A short, exquisitely sad James novella about pride and appearances, a good entry point to his shorter fiction. Download the free EPUB.
