Thirteen-year-old Ernest Kershaw comes to live with his misanthropic uncle at Dum’s Ness, grows up beside his loyal friend Jeremy, and falls in love with Eva Ceswick. When a duel forces him abroad, the story moves to South Africa and the Anglo-Zulu War, while at home Eva is pressed toward another marriage.
Written just before King Solomon’s Mines, it blends English domestic drama with Haggard’s first-hand knowledge of Natal. Download the free EPUB.
