Iden is a gifted, impractical farmer whose land is slipping away from him, his wife is sharp-tongued with worry, and their daughter Amaryllis is clever, independent and quick to see through everyone. Little happens beyond the seasons, the house, the garden, visitors and a visit to the fair, yet the book is full of country life closely observed.
Jefferies’s last novel, admired by Edward Garnett, who introduces this edition. Download the free EPUB.
