Richard Mutimer, a London mechanic and socialist orator, unexpectedly inherits a fortune and the green valley of Wanley. He plans to build a model factory there, marries above his class, and finds that money, ambition and the men of the movement test his principles. Gissing sets the radical meetings of Hoxton against the quiet English countryside.
