In 1919 John Dewey and his wife Alice sailed for Japan, where he lectured at the Imperial University in Tokyo, then went on to China for what became a long stay. Their letters home, edited by their daughter Evelyn, describe Japanese hospitality, Chinese politics and student protests, and meetings such as a Manchu lady campaigning against concubinage.
