Henry Blanc, surgeon to the British mission sent to Emperor Theodore of Abyssinia, was imprisoned along with the envoys and the European missionaries in the 1860s. He describes Theodore’s rise, conquests and character, the Europeans caught up in his court, and the daily life of the captives, from hut-building and gardening to sudden danger, until the British expedition of 1868.
