Henry Thornton Wharton gathers all that was then known of Sappho of Lesbos: a memoir of her life and legend, each fragment in Greek, a literal English prose version, and renderings by English poets set beneath it. The fragments are grouped by metre, from the great ode to Aphrodite to the bridal songs and epigrams, with notes on their sources.
The Victorian edition that brought Sappho to a wide English readership, still a fine way to meet the poet line by line. Download the free EPUB.
