Pessoa, raised partly in South Africa, wrote these sonnets in English and published them in Lisbon in 1918. In knotted, Elizabethan-flavoured verse they explore the gulf between the self and what it can express: we are ever unapparent, our soul infinitely far from us, and each of us dreams of others’ dreams.
