Aubrey Tanqueray, a widower of good family, announces to his friends that he is marrying Paula, a woman whose past society will not forgive. He takes her to his country house, where neighbours stay away, his convent-raised daughter Ellean returns, and Paula struggles against the boredom, suspicion and history that threaten their marriage.
