In Inca Peru, Cora is one of the Virgins of the Sun, sworn to the temple and forbidden to love. She has given her heart to Alonzo, a Spanish officer serving the Inca king, and the High-Priest and High-Priestess must decide what is due to a law that condemns her. Anne Plumptre’s 1799 translation brought the play to English readers.
