Julius Caesar arrives in Egypt after the death of Pompey to find the boy king Ptolemy ruled by scheming counsellors, the politician Photinus and the captain Achillas, and the Roman renegade Septimius ready to sell anyone. Cleopatra, hidden away by her brother, sets out to win Caesar, while the court plots against them both. Modern scholars credit the play chiefly to Fletcher and Massinger.
