Ellida, the second wife of Doctor Wangel, grew up beside the open sea and cannot settle in his fjord town or among his two daughters. Years ago she pledged herself to a mysterious sailor; now a stranger appears at the garden fence to claim her, and Wangel must decide whether a wife can be held against her will. Translated by Eleanor Marx-Aveling.
