An Edinburgh artist who had sailed with the Dundee whaling expedition to the Antarctic in 1892 records whaling as it was practised with harpoon guns and steam catchers in the early twentieth century, along with bear and seal hunting in the Arctic. He writes as a painter, catching moonlit decks, flensing knives and blubber, and the men at work.
