Bartram spent four years botanising through the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida and among the Creek and Cherokee, and wrote it up in prose so vivid that Coleridge and Wordsworth plundered it for imagery. The alligators of the St Johns, the great meadows, the Indigenous towns — all recorded by a genuinely careful observer.
