In 1777 Roger Wallingford of Berwick, Maine, is suspected by his neighbours of Tory sympathies. To prove himself to Mary Hamilton, the woman he loves, he ships with Captain John Paul Jones on the Ranger, bound for France and the raid on Whitehaven. Suspicion follows him aboard, and the story moves between the ship, the Piscataqua shore and an English prison.
