In 1644 the Marquis of Montrose raises the Highland clans for King Charles against the Covenanters and the Campbells of Argyle. Scott weaves the true story of the feud behind Lord Kilpont’s death into a tale of young Menteith, the gentle Annot Lyle, the haunted Allan M’Aulay, and Captain Dugald Dalgetty, a pedantic soldier of fortune who fights for whoever pays.
Shorter and livelier than many Waverley novels, worth reading for Dalgetty alone. Download the free EPUB.
