In April 1665 the strict, pious grocer Stephen Bloundel of Wood Street gathers his wife, children, apprentice and servants for evening prayers, unaware of what the year will bring. As the pestilence spreads, he victuals and seals up his house, while quack doctors, plague nurses, gamesters and gallants work the stricken streets. The Great Fire and the burning of the cathedral close the story.
