The Duke of Monmouth’s rising and its defeat at Sedgemoor form the background to this romance of the West Country. Barbara Winslow throws in her lot with the rebels, while a man who wears her scarlet ribbon hidden next to his heart finds himself on the other side, and the cruelties that followed the battle put them both in peril.
